“It should not be the responsibility of individuals to prop up city services that the administration should be funding as a priority”

On March 29th, 2024, Eno crafted an auditory journey for an audience at National Sawdust— guiding them through hand-picked pieces of his discography alongside a string quartet from the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME). What follows is a series of vignettes from that evening.

“Sensorium Ex was made out of necessity and this continuous need that we have for inventing new paths. The imagination of the work is rooted in an ideology that all these voices are extraordinary and need to be heard. The question is how do we create more space for it? This question is also what gets me going, whether it be creating a space like National Sawdust or a new pathway forward while working on this opera."

"I do think that National Sawdust is the future of a realm of opera. I’m not saying we’re going to eliminate the proscenium and we’re going to eliminate big, grand opera that is presented in many theaters, but I see opera evolving in a more immersive direction. And I think National Sawdust lends itself to do exactly that."

For the better part of a generation, opera companies have been asking this same question: what is the state of music in our time, and how is it changing?...National Sawdust has a proven answer to this question that has plagued opera companies for decades. The National Sawdust performance space—a modern Williamsburg, Brooklyn venue constructed within the façade of an industrial 19th century sawdust factory—offers genre-expanding performances of contemporary opera in an intimate setting.

On February 7th at 6pm, MOTIF hosted a virtual roundtable with the composers of A WORTHY MIRROR, a commissioning project from early music revivalists that puts 12th-century poet-composers in conversation with their modern counterparts. Moderated by poet and critic danilo machado, this roundtable explored how A WORTHY MIRROR translates lyric poetry into new compositions, forefronts female and anonymous femme voices in medieval canon, and reflects upon themes of gender, self, and relationships across time.

“There's something about this piece of paper, how it transforms and is trying to figure out what it is. For me, I feel like that is life—we're trying to figure out who we are the whole time.”

“Breathless validates the work of physical laborers, rather than dehumanizing them, and aims to counteract the common narrative of robot takeover in the workplace by teasing out the expressive, dance-like qualities of the robot arm…In viewing embodied labor as a kind of dance, Breathless: Catie and the Robot asks the audience to witness manual work as choreographed and performed.”

"JJJJJerome shares how instrumental music has always been a significant space for grieving and dwelling. He tells me about how he’s always been drawn to music that deploys certain organizational techniques (like loops, drones, vibrato) that facilitate—and teach—dwelling. This dwell, this slow, is in many ways a protest to capitalist, ableist urgency."

“After the protests in response to the killing of Mahsa Amini in 2022, it was an extremely difficult and isolating time. And I had all these emotions that just came out of me, like anger, anxiety, and I just found out that it’s a bit liberating to just express an aspect of the emotions in the work…Even though the work is very heavy and dark, it became an outlet of expression for me.”

“McBane’s compositional practice lends itself to evocative imagery and sprawling atmospheres...Topography draws on this music, building sweeping atmospheres from intricate, repeating patterns that slightly change with each reiteration. When McBane started composing the work, he was interested in crafting music that stretched out, imagining dusty desert roads and crispy flora that sprawled for miles and family hikes up and down the rocky California terrain.”

“We are the current generation, we are those whose voices are yet to be heard. And, in composing, we're expressing thoughts and ideas that are entirely relevant to our time period now, and are creating a place for our voices to be heard in the future.”

“We're not telling a perfect story with a throughline in every kind of way. We're trying to be storytellers, but not in a traditional sense. I've been around for a while. The dancers that come [to work with me] want to be part of a process that's going to be chewy and full and complex. I want to keep working with artists in that vein.”

“In Kibbey’s latest work Crossing the Ocean, six composers who emigrated to the States bring their musical traditions to her and the harp…Kibbey asked each composer the same question: which is the rock from which you’re cut? And how do those memories (musical or otherwise) synthesize with your current circumstances?"

“When things are personal, they also wind up being universal. Because, as human beings, we have so much in common. And if you’re dealing with something in a very direct way, and present it as art, [your audience] may project their own experience onto it. I don’t call that narcissism, it’s generosity.”

“I was experiencing [the Nagorno-Karabakh war] at a distance, by myself, far from my family and my country, and all of this came out in the music. This was my way of trying to heal, hope and dream, but also to express real sorrow. I lost friends in that war, I have friends who lost their homes. Music was my outlet.”

“The oboe’s singularity comes from its inherent resistance. We blow air through a tiny opening, into a very narrow resonating body—that resistant energy is what makes its sound so potent and its aural effect so profound. I think you could argue the political resistance that plays a large role in this music is well-suited to the instrument.”

“In the way that Chen was able to connect with friends and collaborators around Ligeti, Chen believes that surviving the future, and unpredictability in general, is the mission of music. From childhood, Barwick was into music. She describes her mother as a “beautiful singer,” and as a kid growing up in Tulsa, she sang in a number of choirs around her city. “[Music is] my biggest joy in life,” Barwick says. She has now expanded far beyond Brooklyn’s DIY scene, touring the world and building up to a new path in composing film music.

To [Emile], it was important to stray away from an ambiance or etherealness film scores usually have, and this was particularly so when it came to voice. “I wanted you to feel it in your ear,” he said.

“I feel like I'm in a boat in the middle of the ocean. And then to my right, there's a storm, but then to the left, there's a sunset and so it's like beauty and chaos all at the same time.”

In Paraíso, much hinges on these choices, and on the idea of choice itself. How does one choose to migrate—choose to leave paradise? Is any choice even yours considering all of the structures creating pressured conditions for living and leaving?

“I was inspired by the contrasts. You can still be in love and still have that type of suffering and be courageous enough to open your heart. It’s about deconfining yourself and keeping your heart open.”
