Alicia Hall Moran: The Ice Project, The Battle Of The Carmens

Inspired by Debi Thomas, the first black American to win elite National and World titles, Alicia Hall Moran joined “The Shadows,” a precision figure skating team in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As Debi Thomas refined her Carmen-themed long program for the 1988 Olympics, it came to light that her East German competitor, Katerina Witt, would also skate to music from Bizet’s famous opera. And so the Olympic showdown known to figure skating fans worldwide, “The Battle Of The Carmens,” was born.

Theo Bleckmann Presents: Meredith Monk With Theo Bleckmann And Katie Geissinger In Concert

The iconic composer/performer Meredith Monk offers one of her rare, more intimate concerts in her premiere at National Sawdust, with two of her esteemed colleagues, Theo Bleckmann and Katie Geissinger, both highly acclaimed singers in the New Music world. Fresh from her appointment as the Debs Composers Chair at Carnegie Hall (2014-15) and recent National Medal of Arts award from President Obama, Monk has been hailed as both “a magician of the voice” and “one of America’s coolest composers”. The concert reflects five decades of innovation and awe-inspiring vocal mastery, mining the depths of the myriad possibilities of the human voice.

Found Sound Nation: LADAMA And El Puente Showcase

LADAMA is an ensemble comprised of four incredible musicians from across the Americas who create and perform original music, and strive to inspire and engage women and youth in their respective communities to engage in music-making, sound design, composition, and audio production. LADAMA aims to address gender inequality and unequal representation of women and encourage all to express their humanity by building community through music. A week long residency in partnership with Found Sound Nation and National Sawdust, LADAMA will work with young people and women from the El Puente Leaders for Peace and Justice and co-create a new performance piece for a live audience, in addition to leading a performance by LADAMA themselves.

LADAMA’s individual mastery as performers in traditions ranging from frevo and maracatu from Brazil, to joropo songs from Venezuela, to cumbia and gaita from Colombia, to soul music from the U.S.A., combined with their experience in border-crossing collaboration that began with the State Department-sponsored exchange and creative springboard of OneBeat (1beat.org), point to group’s high caliber and innovative hybrid approach. They offer an experience to American audiences that is unmatched by any national or international group.
As educators and facilitators, the group draws from specific cultural contexts of the communities they serve to prove a foundation for participants to use music as a basic form of personal expression to address issues most pertinent to them.
