Trevor Dunn’s trio-convulsant, birthed in 1997 on the tails of a second Mr. Bungle record, will perform in its third manifestation while maintaining the guitar-trio-core with Mary Halvorson & Ches Smith; South Korean bassist Jeong Lim Yang’s Zodiac Trio will present the music of Mary Lou Williams in a recreation of her Zodiac Suite from 1945.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
NYC’s busiest double bassists Jeong Lim Yang and Trevor Dunn unite on this double bill featuring new work from their respective trios. Jeong Lim Yang’s trio–featuring Argentinian pianist Santiago Leibson and drummer Tom Rainey–will recreate Mary Lou Williams’ boundary-breaking Zodiac Suite. The third iteration of Trevor Dunn’s trio-convulsant, featuring guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Ches Smith–will perform their new album Seances in a septet version of the ensemble for the first time. The new “trio-convulsant avec folie à quatre” will include a chamber quartet comprised of violist Carla Kihlstedt, cellist Mariel Roberts, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, and flutist Anna Webber.
About the Program
South Korean bassist Jeong Lim Yang’s Zodiac Trio will present the music of Mary Lou Williams in a recreation of her Zodiac Suite from 1945. This book of third-stream compositions "completely eroded the whites-only barrier to the Carnegie Hall stage" when it premiered mid-20th century. Yang’s reworking is available on Fresh Sound New Talent Records.
Trevor Dunn’s trio-convulsant, birthed in 1997 on the tails of a second Mr. Bungle record, will perform in its third manifestation while maintaining the guitar-trio-core with Mary Halvorson & Ches Smith. The new “trio-convulsant avec folie à quatre” presents new music on Kris Davis’ label Pyroclastic Records. The album “Séances” explores the suspect world of religious hysteria in 18th century France by way of angular counterpoint, free improvisation framed in distinct formal compositions healthy doses of energy and disorientation for both the performer and listener.

During the pandemic Dunn founded an independent record label Riverworm Records and released his project SpermChurch, a duo with Dutch-Indonesian electronic musician Sannety. His third trio-convulsant record “Sèances” (Pyroclastic), amended with a chamber quartet, was released in 2022. Forthcoming recordings include more film music, KingDunn (acoustic duo with Buzz Osborne from the Melvins), Ahleuchatistas and Titans To Tachyons. Published writings include articles about doing laundry, surviving the road, bass technique, decay and loss.
About Jeong Lim Yang’s Zodiac Trio
Native South Korean, bassist Jeong Lim Yang performed extensively in New York City since 2011 as a sideman with great figures in the scene such as Jason Palmer, Oscar Noriega, and Kenny Wollesen. In 2017, her debut album as a leader and a composer titled Déjà vu (fresh sound) won ‘the best debut album of the year’. Yang released the experimental Brooklyn-based collective band “mute” in 2020 (fresh sound) and receives international proclamation. Yang’s lyrical and melodic playing has been pursued and desired by many contemporary jazz and improvised musicians.
Argentinian-born, Brooklyn-based pianist Santiago Leibson released 5 records as a leader: Amon (2014), Pendular (2015), Out of Orden (2016), Episodes (2018), and Little Pieces (2020). In 2019 Leibson made his Carnegie Hall debut playing a solo concert of original and classical compositions at the prestigious series “Sofia Rosoff Presents” organized by Abby Whiteside Foundation.
Yang’s Zodiac trio (with Tom Rainey on drums, except on the record it’s Gerald Cleaver) was inspired a number of years ago by Yang and Leibson’s pure love of Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite(1945) and had a long journey of finding the trio’s original and unique sound.
