Student CoLab is National Sawdust’s flagship education program for middle school composers. This free concert is the culmination of the 4-month commissioning program, featuring performances by the students, including original music for voice, guitar, bandola, and cello, as well as electronics and visual art — all written and designed by the students.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

This year, Student CoLab expands beyond its partnership with El Puente Beacon’s Young Leadership Program in Williamsburg, to include John Ericsson Middle School 126 in Greenpoint. Students from both schools will present their work at the culminating concert.

Led by National Sawdust lead teaching artist Juana Luna — cantora, songwriter, and teaching artist for the Lullaby Project and Big Note Little Note at Carnegie Hall — alongside a team of teaching artists, the afternoon celebrates the students’ journeys of discovery and self-expression, and reflects the program’s commitment to accessibility, celebration, and community engagement.

The program engages young people by using the power of music discovery to inspire interdisciplinary art-making which reflects their own experience of the world. With the aim that this journey of artistic discovery and self-expression empowers young people to have a voice on issues that affect them, while also enabling them to explore and fulfill their potential as creative beings.

This is a seated performance. Please email boxoffice@nationalsawdust.org if you have accessibility needs.
