American Modern Ensemble (AME)

American Modern Ensemble (AME) is a flexible, twenty-four-member ensemble that is extraordinarily committed to programming American music, in addition to providing educational and outreach programs in the New York area and residencies, including Princeton University, CUNY Graduate Center, James Madison University and more. AME presents engaging programs to audience members who have little exposure to contemporary repertoire and also to the community at large. AME’s programs are thematic, playful and memorable, without sacrificing the quality or rigor of the works on the program.

Since 2005, AME has performed over 200 living American composers, and has “consistently demonstrated a flair for inventive programming” (New York Times). AME presents programs in New York City’s five boroughs and holds an annual competition for young, emerging, and professional composers with cash awards and premiere recordings and performances.

American Modern Ensemble also makes professional recordings via its house label, American Modern Recordings (AMR) with distribution through Naxos, as well as archival audio and multi-camera videography of most of our programs. Collaborations with opera and dance companies are a staple of our mission with recent partnerships, such as American Opera Projects, Prototype Festival, and Dance Theater of Harlem.
