Steve Smith

Steve Smith has been involved professionally in music and media for nearly 30 years, most recently as an assistant arts editor at the Boston Globe,where his beat included classical music, pop music, and the visual arts. Prior to that, he served as a music editor at Time Out New York for 13 years, and contributed to The New York Times as a freelance reporter and critic for just over seven years concurrently. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, Village Voice, The Wire, Decibel, Jazziz, Jazz Times, Down Beat, Chamber Music, and Symphony magazines, and he continues to contribute to Before turning to journalism full time, Steve was a classical radio DJ in Houston, and worked as a publicist at BMG Classics, the Knitting Factory, and other New York organizations. He trained formally as a classical percussionist, and put those skills to use with jazz and rock bands in Houston and New York.
