Hildegard von Bingen is recognized as the first documented woman composer, but to us she represents so much more—a woman who transcended surrounding pressures to “stay in her place” to meaningfully contribute to the musical canon and scientific literature. During the month of June, we’re honoring Hildegard with five performances that channel the power and brilliance of women through a distinctly National Sawdust lens, blind to genre or old conventions. The month will honor women artists, women composers, and women of generations long past and ones that are emerging in the next generation. Some say that the future is female, but we’re excited to highlight the women of now, too.
National Sawdust (NS), an unparalleled, artist-led, non-profit venue, is a place for exploration and discovery. A place where emerging and established artists can share their music with serious music fans and casual listeners alike.
