The Revolution Vol. 32: Ayoinmotion, Apex Sky, & LADYBUG
9:30pm doors • 10pm show
Much of the charm of a place like Brooklyn comes from discovering what secret events hide inside seemingly mundane brick buildings with colorful street art plastered on their walls. Wandering the streets of Brooklyn’s culturally booming neighborhoods you may ask yourself, “What exclusive functions could I attend if I were lucky enough to be in-the-know?” -Soundigest
THE REVOLUTION is a performance series highlighting Brooklyn & Harlem based artists + musicians that not only represent the core of independent pop culture but who currently stand in the breeding ground of evolution within their genre.
This local musical movement empowers community, change, and activism through performance and unity amongst the arts. Once a month, three different artists showcasing three different genres have a chance to spread love, light, and awareness through their music and their stories. This series supports revolutionary artistry and how important music is to healing, in all aspects of life.
As a part of VOL. 30, The Revolution will feature three incredible live performances from local artists:
Ayoinmotion, Apex Sky, & LADYBUG
Pulsating afrobeats, hip-hop, a hard-driving band, and blazing dancers make seeing Ayoinmotion live a uniquely unforgettable experience. Carnegie Hall recently presented the magnetic artist in partnership with the Bronx Museum for their prestigious concert series, and Essence Magazine labeled him, “a dynamic performer…that leaves a lasting impression on any audience”.
Ayoinmotion has toured Europe, opened for Talib Kweli at the legendary J.Dilla’s tribute (hosted by Jairobi of A Tribe Called Quest), and more recently, Afrobeats superstar Davido during his 30 Billion-World Tour. He has also shared the stage with Timaya, Ayo Jay, graced the legendary Apollo theater and featured at SXSW, where he opened for Gyptian.
He excitedly takes The Revolution stage to present his new EP, SOVA (Sounds & Vibes from Ayoinmotion). About SOVA, Ayo says: “This is my most complete, musical exposition to date. I am expressing life in fluid and unapologetic artistry. It is an invitation to all, but it doesn’t seek anyone’s permission to be Nigerian, to be American, to be an immigrant, to be a poet, to be soulful, to be an artist, to be an activist, to be myself, without boundaries. In SOVA I speak, I dance, I am vulnerable, I fly, and most of all, I am free and welcome you to be free with me.”
LADYBUG is the first project by Jacklyn Thomas.
Writing in the valleys of the Appalachian mountains, flower fields of Aspen, and the Catskill quarries and waterfalls, this project is exploring the relationship between love and nature.
LADYBUG music is a female-empowering project with groovy melodies. A soulful potion for your emotions.
Apex Sky is a collaborative duo based in New York City from composer Ricardo Romaneiro and vocalist Hannah Sumner. Together they create gently atmospheric works in a variety of media, encompassing ambient and instrumental music with contemporary undertones.
Exploring a shared aesthetic of natural beauty and simplicity focused around organic collaborations, the pair began collaborating in 2015, initially improvising sessions between electronics and vocals, then developing the songs into a more formalized, structured and orchestrated works.
Creating highly produced, emotional works, the duo invites the listener into an abstract cinematic soundscape; weaving words, music & film.
