RAE ISLA, Hadassah, and Madam West
The Revolution Vol. 30
9:30pm doors • 10pm show
Much of the charm of a place like Brooklyn comes from discovering what secret events hide inside seemingly mundane brick buildings with colorful street art plastered on their walls. Wandering the streets of Brooklyn’s culturally booming neighborhoods you may ask yourself, “What exclusive functions could I attend if I were lucky enough to be in-the-know?” -Soundigest
THE REVOLUTION is a performance series highlighting Brooklyn & Harlem based artists + musicians that not only represent the core of independent pop culture but who currently stand in the breeding ground of evolution within their genre.
This local musical movement empowers community, change, and activism through performance and unity amongst the arts. Once a month, three different artists showcasing three different genres have a chance to spread love, light, and awareness through their music and their stories. This series supports revolutionary artistry and how important music is to healing, in all aspects of life.
As a part of VOL. 30, The Revolution will feature three incredible live performances from local artists:
RAE ISLA, Hadassah, and Madam West
Rae Isla creates “ether pop” music – songs with catchy hooks and spiritual depth. Hailing from a small island near Seattle, she now resides in Brooklyn. Her debut single Mexico was produced by Gianluca Buccellati (Tei Shi, Lana Del Rey) and was released via ONErpm in late 2017. The track features Mexican guitarist Lito de la Isla of Los Rumberos and was written in the famous Mexico City neighborhood of Coyoacán, home to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. She co-produced her second single Just Because alongside rising pop artist Dominique. The music video for Just Because, which marked Rae’s directorial debut, was released via MTV Latin America in February, 2018. Rae is currently self-producing her debut EP, working with musicians from Mexico, London, and New York to create a stunning and foreign soundscape to support her signature pop-form songs.
Hadassah is a neo soul singer/songwriter from Long Island, New York. Her music delivers an experiential story while fusing jazz, soul, and R&B on a minimalist backdrop.
For Hadassah, music is a journey, both meditative and self-empowering, with every song creating a visual story. “I think it as important as a sunrise and a sunset each day that we listen to our hearts before we listen to what others believe is for us. So here I am, Hadassah, a 22-year old wanderer, who is not lost. This is where I come to cleanse and to heal myself”
Madam West is an NYC-based psychedelic soul quintet. Originating as a synthpop duo in a musty Bushwick basement, the group has since grown into a five-piece fusing neosoul, rock and psychedelia. Their arrangements seek to find the sunlight that remains—even in a cold-shouldered city, during what often seems like the darkest of times.
In March 2018, Madam West released its Warm Bodies EP on Brooklyn imprint Floordoor Records (Public Speaking, A Bunch of Dead People), which No Depression called “a fine, wide-ranging EP release, packed with more in its six songs than most full length albums can hope to muster.”
**REVOLUTION EXTRA FUN FACT: Three fifths of the band are urban cyclists, and in her free time, lead singer Sophie Chernin is a bike activist working to make NYC’s public spaces safer and greener for pedestrians, public transit riders and cyclists.
