PUBLIQuartet

Freedom and Faith

About

PUBLIQuartet — the National Sawdust Artists-in-Residence hailed for being “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music” (Washington Post) — present a concert of music by extraordinary female composers exploring the intertwined themes of freedom and faith. PUBLIQuartet has collaborated with artists ranging from the International Contemporary Ensemble to Helga Davis and Billy Childs, and has appeared everywhere from Lincoln Center to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where they performed an improvised soundtrack to a live presidential debate. Dedicated to commissioning and presenting works by composers outside of the standard classical canon, this program will feature established icons like Meredith Monk and Ella Fitzgerald alongside rising stars like Shelly Washington and Jessica Meyer in a celebration of women past and present.

Program:
PUBLIQuartet: MIND | THE | GAP: “Sancta Femina” (2017)
Shelly Washington: MIDDLEGROUND (2016)
Meredith Monk: Stringsongs (2005)
PUBLIQuartet: MIND | THE | GAP: “Nina Simone” (2018)
Ella Fitzgerald: “A Tisket, a Tasket” (1938)
Jessica Meyer: Get into the NOW (2017)

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
