In May 2013, pianist and composer Elio Villafranca was among six artists hand-selected by Chick Corea to be part of that year’s Chick Corea Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This year, National Sawdust is pleased to present The Elio Villafranca Quintet, featuring Will Calhoun, performing for only the second time the same homage to Corea, including Corea’s own works and original Corea-inspired pieces that clearly demonstrate Villafranca’s compositional prowess. Paquito D’Rivera hailed Villafranca as “amongst the best representatives of the new generation of Cuban pianists and composers…” Despite his improvisational skills, Villafranca respects composition above all else and is perhaps best known for his ability to seamlessly blend genres. A true innovator of jazz, classical, and Cuban influence, Villafranca displays a rare combination of technical and improvisational virtuosity, delicate romanticism, and compositional excellence.
