About
Artist-in-Residence J Hoard, the Brooklyn–based singer and songwriter who won a Grammy Award for his work with Chance the Rapper, curates this showcase of the unique voice he’s cultivating in underground clubs on the Lower East Side. His vibrant melodies, lyrical genius, and infectious beats have launched him to international prominence, landing him featured spots in music festivals in Canada and Mexico, and he has toured with artists ranging from Sonnymoon and Kimbra to Meshell Ndegeocello and Pharoahe Monch.
In this concert, J Hoard shares the stage with singers Rashad McPherson, Chauncey Matthews, Ron’ette Hoard, and Michael Blume, one of Billboard’s 12 Musicians to Discover During LGBTQ Pride Month last year.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

The Artists

J Hoard is a Brooklyn–based singer and songwriter on the Grammy Award–winning Coloring Book. Since moving to BK, he’s served as vocalist of the legendary hip-hop curated jam The Lesson in the Lower East Side. Over the last three years, J Hoard’s voice, lyrical genius, and fashion have become a staple in the urban and traditional music scenes.
In 2015, he was a featured artist in the Montreal Jazz Festival program; that same year he successfully provided a vocal program for the Xalapa Jazz Festival in Mexico. The following year, he was praised in DownBeat for his concert during opening ceremony and second vocal program of the Xalapa Jazz Festival. During these years, he also toured with Anna Wise and Sonnymoon as well as sharing bills and stages with Bilal, The Stepkids, Kimbra, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Pharoahe Monch.
Beyond performance and teaching, J Hoard is studio centered. Since summer 2015, he has released reflective music intended to provide healing via urban beat production and vibrant melodies. This was first achieved on his EP entitled “Feel Good”. The following single, “Arctic”, received excellent response in the July ’16 Sofar Sounds live premiere. “Sirens” was premiered on Okayplayer during Grammy week 2017, and went on to be featured on Noisey Radio (Beats1 Apple Music Station). It has since remained in rotation.
Lastly, J Hoard is a recent Grammy recipient due to his songwriting contribution on Chance the Rapper’s hit “No Problem”. In addition, this past year, he has co-written three singles with Sonnymoon (Anna Wise, Dane Orr), been featured on the recently released “Everything’s Fine” by hip hop legends Jean Grae and Quelle Christ, and been featured on the new critically acclaimed Meshell Ndegeocello album.
