About the Show
From the people who brought you the musical parody mashup Wicked Frozen (and a bunch of indie albums you’ve never heard) comes the slasher musical you’ve been waiting for: SOUTH BY SOUTH DEATH. When her jaded New York friends head south to attend the infamous Didgeridoo Arts Festival, Sarah reluctantly tags along to see her ex open for pop superstar Ciley Myrus. But when a psycho in a Ciley mask starts killing off her squad and posting murder selfies, Sarah must survive a debaucherous landscape of sex, drugs, and EDM to unmask the “Selfie Killer.” By turns campy slasher-comedy, meticulous murder mystery, and vicious pop culture satire, SOUTH BY SOUTH DEATH is an epic rock musical about #ambition, #envy and #Instagram.

About the August Labs
In our inaugural LAB series, National Sawdust provides local Brooklyn artists condensed residency time to develop and showcase music-based works. We chose works that explore interdisciplinary arts and sciences, including but not limited to architecture, film/video arts, literature, theatre, and visual arts. This August we will incubate and present a total of five world premieres with Artists ranging from novice to expert.
On the surface of Toby Singer and Jared Saltiel’s South by South Death (SxSD), you might see a campy slasher musical. But upon closer inspection, SxSD becomes a commentary on pressing issues: the dark side of money-driven music and the brutality of the social media era. In our August LABS, Singer and Saltiel will unlock the full potential of their work, using projections of “live” social media updates to create a uniquely immersive theater experience.
