In Situ: Afripedia

Afripedia is a new platform to discover and promote creativity in an evolving Africa. First to launch from Afripedia is a five-part documentary series portraying the burgeoning art scene in Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Kenya, and Angola. Afripedia shares the stories of a new generation of creatives who are participating in contemporary culture. These films are part of a transmedia project that will expand into a global platform for Africa and the African diaspora to inform, connect, follow, and showcase their artistic practices.

Afripedia x Kenya (7:30-8:30 pm)

Through the stories of its key talents, ‘Afripedia, Kenya’ takes an intimate look at Nairobi’s urban culture scene and its leading personalities and stars. Meet 3D-artist Andrew Kaggia , creator of the 3D-animated political short film, taking you to his futuristic vision of Nairobi and proving that disability is never inability. Features musical guest Blinky Bill from Just a Band.

Blinky Bill is a Kenyan musician, producer, DJ and part of Kenyan music and art collective Just A Band. His music is a blend of electronic music, hip hop, tribal African funk. He has played at SXSW 2015, SummerStage NYC, Paleo Festival In Switzerland, Poptech and was a participant at the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo in 2014 as well as a TED Fellow.

Afripedia x GHANA (8:30–9:30 pm)

The whispers among connoisseurs talk about Accra as the next big hotspot for African cultural production, and ‘Afripedia, Ghana’ suggest they’re not wrong. Meet outspoken and androgynous music star Wiyaala, exciting trick bikers Bikelordz whose BMX skills and flamboyant style have taken neighbourhoods by storm. Artist Serge Attukwei Clottey highlights environmental issues through street performances as his alter ego, Afrogallonism, the modern water warrior.

Creating across continents and dividing her time between Accra, Copenhagen & New York City, Jojo Abot’s emergence onto the global music scene marks the genesis of an exciting new talent and sound.

Afripedia in Conversation (9:30-10pm)

Afripedia founders and filmmakers Senay Berhe and Teddy Goitom and the musicians Jojo Abot and Blinky Bill discuss their practices. The conversation is moderated by Ngozi Odita, founder and Creative Director of Society HAE.
