I Am Snow Angel presents Mothership
with special guest Laura Escudé
6pm doors • 7pm show
I Am Snow Angel presents MOTHERSHIP, an immersive album release show, featuring special guest Laura Escudé.
This show is an introduction to the world of I Am Snow Angel’s new concept album, MOTHERSHIP, due out January 25, 2019. The album was self-produced, engineered, and mixed while isolated in a cabin in the wintery Adirondack woods of northern New York. It touches on themes of isolation, love, longing, paranoia, and the paranormal. The show will be a sonic and visual journey into the central character’s struggle with unattainable love. It begins with her desperate desire to escape this world and all its pain, loss, and confusion. The protagonist is surveilled by an otherworldly entity and subsequently abducted. She is re-programmed aboard the mothership and, ultimately, returns to a changed world in an enlightened, re-imagined state. She is now able to see and grasp the vital truths about love and forgiveness that had eluded her for so long.
Visual storytelling will unfold through the lens of photographer and visual artist Forrest Smith and creative director Patrick Ermlich.
The night will open with a special guest performance by Laura Escudé, synthesizing her skills as a classically trained violinist and her prowess as an avant-garde electronic producer. Escudé’s recently released Transmute EP is her most intimate work to date, capturing the sound and feel of a woman who’s examined the darkest parts of herself and come out the other end transformed. Escudé’s live performances are known for their sleek futuristic style and the raw emotion she elicits from her musical machines.
Join us on this wintery night in Brooklyn and get lost in the world of two of electronic music’s most unique and compelling artists.
I AM SNOW ANGEL fuses digital and organic elements to create a sound that is at once ethereal and earthly. The music is composed, performed, produced, and engineered by recording artist Julie Kathryn. She has been featured by The Huffington Post, Indie Shuffle, Magnetic Magazine, CREEM, Refinery29, All Things Go, and many more for her “fluorescent beats and emotionally charged melodies”. I AM SNOW ANGEL is a rising producer, sound designer for Ableton and Splice.com, and co-founder of Female Frequency, a musical collective dedicated to empowering women and girls in the music industry. Her new concept album, MOTHERSHIP, is scheduled for release in January 2019. The album, recorded in a cabin in the wintery Adirondack woods of northern New York, touches on themes of isolation, longing, love, paranoia, and the paranormal. The first two singles, “You Were Mine” and “Honeybee”, are available now
“As a seasoned producer, she wields her will like a sword, crafting intricate sonic landscapes with an expert’s hand. As I AM SNOW ANGEL, she tells her truth with heartfelt vocals and powerful songwriting. Her live set (is) equal parts spellbinding and spectacular; she waxes between all facets of human emotions with the same ease that she skillfully operates her Ableton Push in crafting her songs live. Through it all, she retains a sincerity that enables her wide and varied emotional range to land, no matter the message.” — Magnetic Magazine
“She puts on one of the finest electronic solo shows I have ever seen: she plays Push, keyboard and guitar. And she sings, of course, with her wonderfully restrained and seductive voice.” — Glamglare
“The eclectic nature of the music of I AM SNOW ANGEL is staggering. She owns the writing, production, and engineering process, much like Grimes, and is a pioneer when it comes to helping women make their own tunes, whatever genre they may be… She was, after all, made to give life to the melancholy of electro. The style of electronica infused with country roots, creates an amalgamation difficult to resist.” — The Electricity Club
“While The Postal Service may have cornered the market on cozy electro-pop over a decade ago, I AM SNOW ANGEL does a damn good job of carrying the torch. Multi-instrumentalist Julie Kathryn puts a polished spin on Gibbard and Tamborello’s homemade sounds, adding sweet whispered vocals that might as well have been pulled straight from our dreams.” — All Things Go
From technology to artistry to production to show design to wellness, there are few people who understand the complete spectrum of the music industry. Laura Escudé is one of these rare individuals.
Based in Los Angeles, Escudé is an artist, innovator, entrepreneur, and live show designer with a deep understanding of complex technology, a profound passion for music and art and a unique talent for fusing the two. Career highlights include designing shows for Kanye West and Jay Z, opening for Miguel on his 2015 Wildheart tour, and building a thriving international business populated by top-tier professionals.
But while Escudé’s life and work are dynamic, her ultimate goal is simply to inspire.
As an artist, Escudé executes this mission through music. She’s released myriad albums, singles, and EPs under the name Alluxe, synthesizing her skills as a classically trained violinist and her prowess as an avant-garde electronic producer. Now making music under her own name, Escudé’s forthcoming Transmute EP is her most intimate work to date, capturing the sound and feel of a woman who’s examined the darkest parts of herself and come out the other end transformed. Escudé’s live performances are known for their sleek futuristic style and the raw emotion she elicits from her musical machines. She’s done official remixes for artists including M83 and Polica, with her violin playing featured on albums by Big Grams, Kanye West, Jay Z, and many more.
Technology is a second language for Escudé, who, in 2008, became the world’s first Ableton Certified Trainer. In 2012, she founded Electronic Creatives, using her skills to hire and train programmers and playback engineers for artists including Logic, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Big Sean, Charli XCX, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The company has become a worldwide leader in the field, with Escudé now leading a staff of fifteen.
These creative applications of technology have made Escudé one of the world’s most in-demand live show designers. She’s brought massive productions to life for artists including Kanye West, Jay Z, Bon Iver, Missy Elliot, Herbie Hancock, and television megabrand American Idol. Escudé toured extensively with these shows, collaborating with artists to create fresh, thrilling experiences for audiences worldwide.
It was while on tour that Escudé learned the challenges of staying healthy on the road. In 2016, tour burnout landed her in the hospital. She was exhausted, stressed, and not sure how to get better. It was a low point that forced Escudé to take a break from work and focus on her health. This physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual process involved letting go of unproductive habits and thought patterns, facing her fears, and giving up everything — alcohol, touring, toxic people — that didn’t serve her. Escudé was soon not just better, but, for the first time in her life, truly thriving.
The experience inspired Escudé to help others, particularly live performers, optimize their own health and well-being. In 2017, she launched the Transmute Retreat, a week-long workshop incorporating yoga, meditation, nature, live performance workshops, and community performances. Since its launch, Transmute has hosted dozens of artists such as AlunaGeorge at a tranquil arts center in coastal Florida.
With all she’s achieved in the realms of music and technology, it’s clear why Escudé has been called “the best in the world at this job”. But despite her many accomplishments, Escudé feels like she’s just getting started and only getting better.
