About the Show
“[In Almazan’s music,] classical, Latin, and post-bop jazz-based musical languages fuse together in ways that are consistently startling and path-breaking… [Alcanza is] uncompromisingly creative… this is music that demands to be heard and experienced.” – All About Jazz
Cuban-American pianist & composer Fabian Almazan performs the title track of his newest album, “Alcanza”, a nine movement suite written for voice, guitar, strings, piano, bass, drums and electronics.
This hour-long experience, colored with drummer Henry Cole‘s entrancingly complex polyrhythms, bassist Linda Oh‘s nimble basslines, and the sultry Spanish lyrics of guitarist/vocalist Camila Meza—to name a few—is a complete performance of the album, released June 2nd on Biophilia Records, written to explore questions of self-discovery, identity, and human beings’ place in a complex and sometimes forbidding universe.
Alcanza (the Spanish word for “reach”) has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s 2014 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Rhizome
Rhizome began making music in 2009 and although originally recorded as part of Fabian Almazan’s debut album “Personalities” [Biophilia Records], it was not until 2012 that the ensemble adopted the name “Rhizome.” The word rhizome refers to the subterranean part of a plant that is able to survive from season to season despite the harsh conditions that may exists above-ground; it provides the tree/plant with the nourishment it needs to continue living and sprout forth new shoots. With an instrumentation and musicians in the ensemble are composer and pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Linda May Han Oh, drummer Henry Cole, singer & guitarist Camila Meza, violinist Megan Gould, violinist Tomoko Omura, Violist Karen Waltuch and cellist Noah Hoffeld. Rhizome explores a myriad of textures/improvisational settings. Although the ensemble has it’s roots grounded in jazz and classical traditions, it is harmony, timbre and rhythm rather than any specific genre that guides Rhizome through its musical journey.
