About this Performance
“The Odysseus Agreement” is an in-progress performance memoir in song that tells the story of a young woman on a single-minded quest to learn about the life and tragic death of her grandmother and namesake. Her trials send her to the bottom of a swimming pool, through the municipal offices of Northern New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale, and down to The Underworld. She dodges sea monsters, whirlpools, and Lotus-eaters, makes futile offerings to the gods, and does battle with the Siren voices in her midst in order to find her way home. Written and performed by Jean Rohe with her band: Chris Tordini (bass), Jordan Perlson (drums), James Shipp (percussion/synthesizers), and Liam Robinson (keyboards/accordion), plus special guests.

About the Artist
Jean’s writing concerns itself as much with the internal world as with the external. Her songs, which range from fantastical riffs on old folktales to autobiographical sojourns, to “phonojournalism”, a genre of her own invention, have won recognition from the ASCAP Foundation and the New York Songwriters Circle. A true citizen artist, she gracefully approaches matters of social concern with artistry and heart. Her 2013 video release, “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” is an aspirational alternative national anthem for the United States, which has now been performed by choirs and bands across the country. No Depression wrote, “Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous.”
“There are plenty of talented artists out there, but what sets Jean Rohe apart are the suppleness of her voice, the integrity of her vision, and the grace she shows in her wide-ranging journeys across the musical landscape.” –John Platt, WFUV New York
