About The Show

New Vintage Baroque, opens its fourth season with a concert dedicated to Grimms’ Fairy Tales at National Sawdust on October 21st at 7pm. A collaboration with composer collective, Oracle Hysterical, the concert features a new commission of twelve stories for baroque band and singers.

Grimms’ tales live in the world of oral folk tales which are variously funny, poignant, and macabre. The Grimm Brothers’ tales tap us back into a world before passive entertainment, where peoples’ need to communicate and entertain drew them into closer relations.  The candor of the original recorded versions of these tales, their dark humor and violence, can shock and surprise those of us who grew up on sanitized versions. These tales bring a beguiling mixture of familiar and unfamiliar, trivial and deep, predictable and bizarre.
