Brooklyn Rider Presents: The Brooklyn Rider Almanac
In September 2014, Brooklyn Rider released the Brooklyn Rider Almanac, a new multimedia project and album featuring a wealth of new commissions. In the cross-disciplinary spirit of Der Blaue Reiter (“The Blue Rider”), the legendary European artistic collective from which the quartet takes its name, each of the new commissions on the Brooklyn Rider Almanac was inspired by an artistic muse of relatively recent memory, from Stravinsky to Chick Corea, Nobel Prize-winning novelist William Faulkner, and Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira, among others. Most of the commissioned composers are best known for their work outside the classical world, in genres ranging from jazz to indie-rock. This show marks the first public performance of many of these works in New York City.
In addition to the music from the Almanac, Brooklyn Rider welcomes a special guest to celebrate the long tradition of Irish fiddle music.
Almanac works to include:
Glenn Kotche – Ping Pong Fumble Thaw
Dana Lyn – Maintenance Music
Robin Kodheli – Necessary Henry
Greg Saunier – String Quartet, parts 1 & 2
Padma Newsome – Heavy Tree Gap
Christina Courtin – Tralala
Aoife O’Donovan – Show Me
Gonzalo Grau – Five-Legged Cat
