Director of Development

Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director and Artistic Director, the Development Director will oversee and grow a comprehensive fundraising program that currently raises approximately $2 million from the board of trustees, individual donors, foundations, corporate foundations, and government agencies. The Director of Development is part of the organization’s senior leadership team, and serves as an important representative with key stakeholders, patrons, and the greater community. The Director manages a full-time Development Associate and receives part-time support (for events, grant-writing, etc.) as needed.

Responsibilities

Using a multi-tiered approach, the Director of Development will drive the growth of existing fundraising initiatives and will create new strategies for the identification, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of new sources of funding. Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

Individual Giving/Major Gifts/Board Development

  • Cultivate and expand existing donor relationships through consistent stewardship and engagement while building a pipeline of potential new donors;
  • Provide support for Artistic Director, Executive Director and Board Leadership in identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors and board prospects;
  • Maintain and/or modify existing structure of donor circles and corresponding benefits;
  • Manage general fundraising appeals twice per year, using both direct mail and digital strategies; and
  • Help plan for, attend, and present fundraising updates at quarterly board meetings.

Institutional Giving

  • Manage calendar of solicitations to foundation and government funding sources;
  • Work with colleagues to strategically “package” programming of interest to specific foundation and government funders;
  • Regularly review prospect research with Development Associate in order to keep the pipeline of new prospects full;
  • Write proposals, develop proposal project budgets, and manage and report on grants received in a timely fashion, managing a part-time grant writer as needed; and
  • Keep current and prospective foundation funders engaged through regular communications and invitations.

Special Events

  • Work with Artistic Director, Executive Director, board members, and gala consultant to meet ambitious fundraising goal for annual Spring Gala;
  • Develop strategy for night-of and post-gala donor engagement;
  • Oversee Development Associate’s tracking, reporting, processing and acknowledgment of gala gifts;
  • Plan and work with staff to execute an additional 3-4 cultivation events per year, both at National Sawdust and off-site in donors’/board members’ homes.

Development Operations

  • Work with senior management to further adjust and optimize inter-departmental protocols include executing donor events with NS’ operations and technical staff and streamlining donor communications with the marketing and membership team;
  • Manage the annual fundraising budgeting process, and track and assess ongoing performance of the department against budgeted numbers;
  • Work with Development Associate to improve development processes including gift processing, donor acknowledgment and benefit fulfillment, monthly donor newsletter, and record keeping; and
  • Stay apprised of trends in the broader funding landscape to ensure that National Sawdust takes advantage of capacity-building and other special funding opportunities that align with its strategic vision.

Qualifications

  • A proven history of successfully achieving and exceeding fundraising goals, especially from major donors
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience working with high-profile board members, patrons, and artists
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, including mastery of best practices in engagement, cultivation, and stewardship, preferably at a cultural institution
  • Ability to think strategically, then communicate and implement innovative ideas successfully across departments
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to take initiative, be proactive, and independent but also be a team player
  • Comfort in a start-up environment and enthusiastic about the opportunity to be a part of a brand new institution

Digital Art Director & Designer

National Sawdust is seeking a multi-talented in-house Digital Art Director/Designer. This person will oversee the entire visual identity of National Sawdust. In addition to leading the art direction, this position, in collaboration with an in-house Copywriter, will be responsible for the creation of all content including social media assets, digital advertising, offline collateral, front-end web design and email design.

Responsibilities

  • Ideate, develop, and execute digital and print creative across web, email, offline advertising, and social
  • Design, code and produce webpages and emails
  • Develop digital assets for social media, digital advertising and websites
  • Create assets for offline collateral including fliers, posters and media decks applying brand consistency across all channels
  • Communicate technical and design issues clearly to stakeholders and propose alternative solutions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 2-5 years of related work experience
  • Proficient in Adobe CC, HTML and CSS
  • Understanding of asset creation for social media advertising and its constraints
  • Demonstrated strong layout design skills with ability to use design principles to communicate effectively to the target audience and drive revenue
  • Knowledge of email optimization, website usability, UX and responsive design desired
  • Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with great attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet deadlines and communicate effectively with internal partners
  • Experience in print and PowerPoint a plus
  • Experience with template sites such as WordPress
  • A background in Marketing a plus

Digital Content Producer

National Sawdust seeks a Digital Content Producer who will be responsible for the day-to-day production and management of all campaigns and campaign material for the Marketing department.  This position requires critical skills in time management, digital workflow processes, scheduling, trafficking, project management and production.

Duties Include:

  • Managing all phases of a marketing campaign from the launch for a creative brief to the follow up emails after a performance and all moments in between
  • Overseeing asset acquisition process from artists, managers and partners, including the scheduling and leading of kick off calls with artists and managers, the immediate follow up with artists and managers on asset requests, the timely acquisition of all assets and the cataloging of all assets for the ease of discovery
  • Coordinating the creation of assets and development of copy for web site, social media, email newsletter, print collateral and more, ensuring in-house designer and copywriter are aware of schedules and deliver necessary material on time
  • Design, build and edit online content, webpages, social media posts, e-newsletters and more
  • Manage approval and trafficking process, ensuring that all approvals have been obtained and necessary changes are implemented before a campaign goes live
  • Create, update and maintain web content in content management system, monitor (quality control) content on live site and trouble shoot or escalating technical problems
  • Ability to write, edit and proof-read written content
  • Create calendars for site content launches and social media posts
  • Manage communities on social platforms, monitoring for any mentions, answering relevant questions, liking and following influencers in our target space and retweeting relevant material

Qualifications

  • BS/BA or equivalent experience
  • 2-3 years of working experience in digital project manager, digital producer or similar experience
  • Experience with WordPress CMS and Email Marketing Clients such as MailChimp
  • Background in producing and publishing content on social media platforms
  • Extremely organized, efficient, detail-oriented and successful at meeting deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Strong relationship management skills—this role will be dealing with a variety of personalities and must always sound informed when representing the company and calm when addressing complex situations
  • A love of team work—this role is the center piece of the team and must enjoy working to bring a group together to accomplish tasks
